MAKE ROOM FOR PRIVATE LABEL PRODUCTS

We all often hear about the overcrowded grocery store products market. Thousands of new products are introduced every year, and many of them won't make it to their second year. It might seem that there is little room for private label products, commonly known as store brands.

The reality is there is plenty of room for private label products and there are several reasons why.

Variety

First, consumers like variety. That is, if presented with only one brand or one kind of a particular product they might turn a bit fussy. Most consumers are more than happy to choose between 2 to 5 similar products when making a purchase.

Many times products will be different from one another in specific ways. For example, jelly beans might be packaged in a bag, in a box, or in a jar. How many jelly beans you get in each package might also vary.

Cost

Private label products are often less expensive. Marketing these products generally costs less than the marketing of products put out by major companies, and they are also less expensive to produce, with the experts behind the products sourcing and purchasing materials from less expensive sources.

Usually private label products offer something that name brand products don't. This might be a cheaper price point, or specialty packaging, or some other facet that appeals to the consumer. This isn't to say that consumers will always choose the private label product over a grocery brand, but it does mean that many consumers are willing to consider the private label brands as equivalent to the grocery store brand.

Marketing

Brand development is an essential component of successfully bringing a new product to the fore. Even if that brand is a store brand, or a private label, many of the same marketing techniques used for name brands can also be used for these brands.

The idea is to make sure that both the brand and products become central in the customer's mind. Part of this comes from store displays and store marketing, but often these private label brands can be marketed through grocery circulars and other marketing materials.

At the end of the day, consumers want quality products that deliver in the areas of cost, packaging and desirability. Provides these essential qualities and consumers will flock to those store shelves, whether they hold brand name or private label products.
